James Weinheimer recently posted this paper, “Reality Check: What is it that the public wants today?” This presentation was part of the CaMMS Forum at the ALA Conference, the theme being “Reimagining the library catalog: changing user needs, changing functionality.”
The paper discusses, in part, using the theory of Narrative Science (described more fully in Weinheimer’s paper) to display statistical data in a textual interface. Weinheimer shows how this could be used in library catalogs to interpret and describe search results for users with a search results summary narrative.
This is the kind of thing that will take library catalogs to the next level. Something RDA cannot accomplish.
